Animal hospital is glad to offer diagnostic endoscopic services for our patients that require direct visualization of the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. Endoscopy is a non invasive procedure that is indispensable in the diagnosis of a variety of diseases.
Endoscopes are made with flexible glass fibers similar to the ones used in telecommunications. They transmit a clear and precise image to the veterinarian through fiberoptic bundles. The tip of the endoscope is small in diameter and flexible, which allows the endoscopist to maneuver through narrow passages such as the intestine or bronchi. Not only can these organs be visualized for disease, but it is possible to remove foreign bodies and procure biopsies
through small channels in the endoscope. This is often preferable to surgery, what is much more painful, invasive and costly.
Endoscopy is always done under general anesthesia to protect our patients and to protect the endoscope that is very fragile and expensive. It is also necessary to prepare our patients before the endoscopic procedure to insure that a clean, clear image can be obtained.
